DESCRIPTION:On the motion of Rev D A Ross\, the Synod in May 2024 appointed a Day of Humiliation and\nPrayer to be observed throughout the Church on Wednesday\, 4 December 2024\, as follows: \nThe Synod appoints a Day of Humiliation and Prayer to be observed throughout the\nChurch on Wednesday\, 4th December 2024. This is because of the deepening moral and\nspiritual darkness relentlessly encompassing Church and State. We are shown from the Word\nof God that in time of crisis the people of God always resorted to humbling themselves before\nGod\, asking for His deliverance. This continues to be the practice of our own Church and\nindeed the visible Church\, at least to some degree. Sadly\, sections of it not only give consent\nto the vilest of sins\, but openly engage in the same. When the children of Israel were properly\nexercised during their time in the wilderness – and before and after that time – they resorted\nto bringing their troubles to the God of eternity. Indeed\, we find this pattern throughout the\nWord of God. \nIt is distressing to observe the enduring purpose of our nation not only to continue in\nthe way of transgressing the Moral Law\, but also its purposeful rejection of Christ Jesus the\nremedy to remove not only the guilt of individuals but also that of nations that are ripening\nfor the judgement of God. It is a frightening reality that our nation would rather keep adding\nsin to sin and search out new forms of ungodliness\, and loves to have it so. Alarmingly\, we\nare a nation more and more given over to all kinds of wickedness and there seems to be no\nholding back. And worse\, sections of the professing Christian Church not only show approval\nof such evils but dare to engage in these abominations. \nThis is a time indeed for us to pray more earnestly that the Lord would come over the\nmountains of our rebellion and not leave us to the inevitable\, destructive consequence of sin.\nFor any one of us to cry in true spiritual prayer to God for the mercy our poor sin-stained\nChurch and State urgently need\, we must have some awareness of our own sin and the\nefficacy of the blood of Christ to cleanse us from our sin. Then we may all the more earnestly\ncry in prayer to God for Church and State\, pleading that God would grant a spirit of\nrepentance and a sense of our abiding need of the mercy of God in Christ\, and thereafter\nendeavour to serve the Almighty God in the spirit of new obedience. “That Thy way may be\nknown upon earth\, Thy saving health among all nations” (Ps 67:2).

DESCRIPTION:The Synod in May 2022 appointed a Day of Humiliation and Prayer to be observed throughout the Church on Wednesday 7th December 2022. In his motion Rev D A Ross said that such a day “is not appointed out of mere custom but in keeping with the Word of God where we have instances of setting apart such days in times of distress to plead with Almighty God to show mercy. Godly Queen Esther did so when the Jewish nation was appointed to be destroyed by wicked Haman. The godless heathen king of Nineveh also did so in response to the predicted destruction of the city for its excessive wickedness. \nThe solemn reality is that we too live in dreadful times. The decline in churchgoing is exceedingly alarming; we need not look further than ourselves as a Church. For example\, in one joint congregation in the Western Presbytery\, 24 members and 341 adherents signed a call to a minister in 1929; today the number attending is less than ten. Moreover\, in many places where once we had spiritually-lively congregations we no longer have a presence. What a sad decline! And it is likewise in the visible Church generally. To make matters worse\, sections of the visible Church have descended to support fornication in its worst form\, that of sodomy. The Westminster Confession of Faith states: “The purest Churches under heaven are subject both to mixture and error; and some have so degenerated as to become no Churches of Christ\, but synagogues of Satan” (chapter 25\, paragraph 5). What else can we say of any professing Christian Church that would support these vile sins which brought Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes? \nAdd to that the awful judgement of war in Ukraine which has impacted the whole world. In Odessa\, Ukraine\, we have one small congregation struggling\, along with their fellow citizens\, against the relentless barrage of weaponry set to destroy the city and kill its inhabitants. \nThese\, and the many other evils which we are daily alerted to\, must surely drive us to the throne of grace to earnestly plead that God would look\, in His great mercy and infinite pity\, upon our poor benighted world as it descends deeper and deeper into moral and spiritual darkness. What He did for the poor Gadarean demoniac\, may He graciously do for us. \nMay we continue to present our humble pleas to the God of heaven\, that He by His Word and Holy Spirit would turn the tide of iniquity.
