The awful delusion to which some have been given over is shown by the following paragraph from the “Churchman’s Magazine”:—
“The height of blasphemy has been reached at Leeds, where one performer had to take the part of the Lord God Almighty. It was the first performance in this country of Hofmannsthal’s ‘mystery’ play, ‘The Great World Theatre.’ It was staged in St Edward’s Church, Holbeck, and was carried out ‘with the approval of the Bishop of Ripon, by permission of the Vicar of the Church, and by co-operation of the Vicar of Leeds.’ The press were easily enlisted to boom the production backed by such sponsors, and they were told to write down ‘it is really breaking no tradition to present such a play in one of our English Churches.'”
