LITERARY NOTICES

Between Mizpeh and Shen

by Pastor G. J. Collier, price 4/- and to be had from the author at 29 Lime Grove, Linslade, Leighton Buzzard, Beds. This booklet extends to 54 pages. The print is clear and the paper of excellent quality. There is a portrait of Mr Collier at the beginning and photographs of his Chapel at the middle of the booklet. But what we may read in this booklet is the real matter of interest, and we are sure this will be so to those who truly fear the Lord and read it. Mr Collier to begin with votes three chapters to his experiences from the time the Lord led him to minister in the Gospel at Bethel Chapel, Linslade. He relates spiritual and interesting experiences as to that call and how he was exercised as to the Word of God in relation to it. During 25 years’ ministry in the congregation, and part of it during the last war, he was not without burdens of a spiritual and temporal nature. Yet he records humbly that precious souls were brought out of darkness into the liberty that is in Christ, by the Holy Spirit, through his ministry. The booklet chiefly consists of the sermons preached by Mr Collier. One is on “And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, etc.”; another upon “Truth shall spring forth of the earth, etc.”; and another from “Rejoice the soul of thy servant, etc.” None of the sermons are long. Mr Collier does give a clear exposition of the essential meaning of his texts, and enlarges thereupon in a gracious, gospel and enlightened manner. We were interested to read Mr Collier’s explanation of Israel as a backsliding heifer.” This heifer was one in decline for want of good pasture and food. The believer “as a backsliding heifer” in spiritual decline in soul, by neglect of the Word of God and the Throne of Grace and for other reasons. We are sure the Lord’s people who read this booklet will find truth to feed upon.
