LETTER WITH SCRIPTURAL ADVICE

Virginia Cottage,
Evanton.
20th Feb. 1906.

My dear Friends,

I was on the mind of writing to you since long, but I was kept back. It came strongly to my mind last night to write as I had the opportunity. I came to Evanton a week ago, as I was not feeling so strong for a while back, and required a rest.

I hope you are all enjoying bodily health, and that you are seeking the spiritual health, which shall never fail you. Dear friends, you have both been very much on my mind for a while back, and I think of how we always used to go on in sin together since we knew one another until I left for service. Now, when I see and feel that one of these sins, whether small or large in themselves, were enough to throw us for ever into that place prepared for the Devil and his angels I cannot but give you both an advice as dear friends, and it is this, if you have not been moved by the Spirit of God to a knowledge of your sins, oh do not rest until the Lord in His mercy let you know your state by nature, and if you know your state by nature, you will see what it is to be under the wrath of God the Father. If you do get to know your natural state and are not at rest there, you will get rest if you will come to Jesus Christ, the Fountain opened for sinners. This is the only saving rest that one can have, and I wish you were both enabled to see this for yourselves; and if you will get it for yourselves, you will seek and pray that others will receive the same.

Dear friends, I hope you will excuse me, and that you will only be moved to love the desire that is put in me for you. We don’t know how soon we will have to give account of what we have done in the body. Therefore, dear friends, think on how precious time is, and don’t put time off, for tomorrow we may be in eternity.

Think of where we would all be today if we were drowned that day we were setting the small lines. I know where I would have been — in the fearful pit, and no expectation of getting out of it, but we are all yet on mercy’s ground, where there is hope for us all, that is, if we shall ask it shall be given to us. Therefore I wish to put you on the Lord’s care. I know you have God-fearing parents, and that you are more on their spirits than on mine, but still, I wish to ask you to keep on praying, and the Lord will give in His own time, for His promise is, “Seek and ye shall find”, and He will keep to His promise.

I hope this letter may be blessed to you both.

Remember me kindly to your friends. I will be going back to Inverness by the end of the week (D.V.) so you may write to that address. I will be pleased to hear from you soon.

Wm. Mackenzie.

Note: The writer of above letter was an uncle of Mrs Wm. Grant, Dingwall, and a brother of her father. He died in May 1907 at the age of 27 years. He resided with Mrs Grant’s parents in their home, Inverness.—Editor.
