This 19-page booklet issued by the Lord’s Day Observance Society reports on, and in a realistic manner attempts to assess the relative difficulties, dangers, and prospects, which arise from the ever-increasing encroachment of Industry upon the sanctity of the Sabbath and the freedom of the “conscientious” individual. The hazards relative to the thorny problem of Industry and the Sabbath are possibly more insidious and damaging than those relative to the Sabbath and recreational activities. When the question of a man’s livelihood is in jeopardy because of the lines on which Industry is run, the situation is serious indeed. Whatever slender rights and safeguards exist at present, the position in the light of present day trends may well deteriorate and cause no little embarrassment and hardship to those who refuse to work on the Lord’s Day.
In this booklet we have the result of a survey conducted by the Lord’s Day Observance Society in the form of a questionnaire sent to a representative number of large industrial concerns, with a letter of enquiry addressed to the Trade Unions involved in those industries. These questions are pertinent and simple, and relate mainly to the nature and measure of employment on the Sabbath. As might be expected, the responses to these questions range from apathy to obvious interest. The most common reason advanced for the necessity for Sabbath work is the need to ensure maximum output in a competitive society. In other words, as the writer points out, in a predominantly materialistic age, economic considerations take precedence over moral and spiritual obligations.
The conclusions arrived at by Mr Legerton are in accordance with the Word of God, and his final recommendations are well worthy of most serious consideration.
In fine, the booklet makes interesting, revealing, and thought-provoking reading, and should not only alert us, but stir us up to assist one another to our utmost in our contentings for the preservation of our priceless heritage — the Christian Sabbath.
