Dear Moderator,
The Secretary of State for Defence, Mr Francis Pym, has asked me to say how much he appreciated your letter of 30th August in which you express, on behalf of the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, your deep sorrow and sense of shock at the death of British soldiers in Northern Ireland on 27th August.
Nothing can, of course, remove the enormous sense of loss which the families of these soldiers will be feeling at this time, but they will, Mr Pym is sure, derive great strength and comfort from your sympathy and your prayers. On Mr Pym’s instructions, therefore, I am conveying your very thoughtful message to the bereaved families.
