HUMAN NATURE IN ITS FOURFOLD STATE by Thos. Boston. Banner of Truth Trust £8.95. 506pp.
This well-bound and attractively produced reprint of Boston’s classic work on the four states of man — Innocence, Nature, Grace and Eternal — does not need recommendation from us as it has been highly prized by the godly of many generations. In it the reader is led into the glory of man’s state before he fell into sin, then on to what man became through his fall in Adam. Next Boston shows what the state of grace is into which a sinner is brought through saving union to the Lord Jesus Christ. Last of all Boston deals with the eternal state of man, covering such topics as death, resurrection, judgment, heaven and hell. The book has a biographical introduction by Rev. George H. Morrison of Dundee which has been taken from the 1899 edition of Boston’s Memoirs.

THE ART OF DIVINE CONTENTMENT by Thos. Watson, Free Presbyterian Publications £3.30. 109pp.
It is good to have a reprint of this work by Thomas Watson which is based on the Scripture: “I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” The paperback is attractively produced and contains, like the other writings of Watson, much that is of a spiritually edifying nature. The subject with which it deals is one in which every Christian ought to have an interest. What a high attainment it is in the life of grace to be content. Discontentment and murmuring is native to us as fallen creatures and only grace can bring us to be of another mind, and only fresh supplies of grace can enable us to continue to live in a contented frame of heart and mind. The Apostle could say: “I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.” This was no small attainment.
We are glad to commend this book and all Thos. Watson’s writings to our readers.
