Abortion of one of a pair of twins
Any abortion that is contrary to Scriptural principles is barbaric, but some cases are more barbaric than others. It came to light recently that several weeks ago an obstetrician in a London hospital killed an unborn twin child in the womb because the mother claimed she could not face the burden of looking after two more children.
We are totally opposed to abortion except when the mother is in danger of losing her life if the pregnancy continues. The killing of this perfectly healthy twin is a particularly clear demonstration of the inhumanity inherent in unjustified abortion.
Abortion is wrong because, as our Synod stated some years ago, it is a gross violation of the divine law, “Thou shalt not kill”. The deliberate killing of children in the womb is an act of barbarity unworthy of a civilised nation. Furthermore, the practice of abortion by medical and nursing staff, other than on the ground mentioned above, is undermining the high standard of medical ethics for which this country was renowned. The present practice of abortion brings awful guilt upon our nation and exposes us to the righteous judgements of God as the blood of those unborn infants cries to heaven for vengeance.
Drug abuse in Scotland increases
THE recently released results of a national survey show that more teenagers in Scotland have tried illegal drugs than teenagers anywhere else in Britain. Almost two thirds of 15 and 16-year-old Scottish boys have smoked cannabis, while 14 per cent have taken Ecstasy.
Dr Patrick Millar, of Edinburgh University’s alcohol and health research group which conducted the survey, said that there has been a sharp increase in all drug use among this age group recently, but that cannabis use has gone up enormously over the past few years.
The survey confirms that high levels of cannabis use among youngsters are associated with poor school performances. Although not mentioned in the newspaper report, the use of cannabis usually leads to the use of more dangerous drugs, such as Ecstasy.
These survey results are another pointer to the fact that Scotland, once the land of the gospel, has become a godless nation, and that the rising generation needs nothing so much as the gospel of the grace of God.
