“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life,” John 8:12.
Survey the happy consequences, which are secured to every such person, by this promissory declaration of the great Lord of heaven: “he . . . shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. . . .”
My brethren, the lips of so great, so wise, so gracious a Person, as, I hope, you believe Jesus Christ to be, were not opened his celestial voice was not uttered to promise trifles. His promises are not more sure than they are deep and comprehensive. He possessed the inimitable art of clothing all the riches of heaven and eternity in the simplest words. This is done in the promise which the text contains, as connected with the character and exercise which it describes: “he . . . shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Here, an unawakened, unenlightened mind will see nothing very valuable, nothing which may not be let slip without much danger. Such contempt, however, may keep a man weeping millions of years hence.
