Cardinal Vaughan’s remarks on the King’s Oath, while addressing the Catholic Truth Society at Newcastle, on 9th September, are carefully to be noted. “No engagement,” said he, “no promise, no oath, was lawful unless the thing promised be just, right, and true. No dispensation from the Pope was needed of an oath that did not bind. Should it ever happen that the King became convinced by God’s grace of the truth of the doctrine he abjured, of what value would be the declaration? No oath could stand against the command of God and of conscience.”
