Commentary on Acts of the Apostles, by the late Rev. Dr. J. A. Alexander of Princeton, U.S.A.: reprinted by The Banner of Truth Trust, 78b Chiltern Street, London, W.1 (price 25/-). The work originally appeared in two volumes. It is here printed in one volume of 408 pages, excellent type and easily handled. We have consulted this commentary from time to time for over thirty years. Alexander does not sermonise in this work; but deals with every verse in The Acts, giving the literal and exact meaning of words and sentences in a form which can be read with the greatest interest and profit by students of the Bible. If at all possible divinity students and ministers should possess a copy.
Thy Word is Truth is published by the Banner of Truth Trust, 78b Chiltern Street, London, W.1. The author is Dr. Edward J. Young, who has given the following sub-title to his book, viz., “Some Thoughts on the Biblical Doctrine of Inspiration.” In his Preface dated February, 1963, the author writes, “The present book is not a technical theological treatise. It is simply a popular book, designed to acquaint the intelligent layman with the Biblical doctrine of inspiration and to convince him of its importance.” Although the author refers to his work as “a popular book,” we would mention that it is not a popular book in a superficial sense. It comes from the pen of a scholar who is devoted to the doctrine of inspiration as taught from within the Bible itself and who most ably and systematically makes his subject deeply interesting to the reader. The book runs to 280 pages and over 400 words to a large page, and costs 15/- per copy. It is excellently bound with hard covers.
