Papers on Scottish Reformation
These Papers were read at the Synod of the Free Presbyterian Church, in May, 1960. Copies of the valuable and instructive book of “Papers Commemorating the Quarter-Centenary of the Scottish Reformation” at 6/- per copy, are still available from Mr J. Grant, Publications Treasurer, and also in several congregations.
In the preface Rev. D. A. MacFarlane says: “If we, and the ends of the earth, were blessed with both the inspired Word, and, with it, the testimony of the Holy Spirit — or otherwise His divine unction — His impartation of eternal life to receive the Gospel of Christ, and Christ in and through the Gospel, then all such would have the Spirit, in measure, of these Reformers of 1560.”
The eight chapters which deal widely with the subject of the Reformation are as follows:—
1. The Church from which the Reformation delivered Scotland.
2. Causes and Progress of the Scottish Reformation until the year 1560.
3. John Knox: Central Figure of the Reformation.
4. Pen Portraits of Fellow Reformers — George Wishart, John Willock, John Wynram, John Row, John Craig, John Spottiswood, John Douglas.
5. The First Book of Discipline (1560).
6. Theological Principles of the Reformation.
7. The Benefits of the Reformation.
8. The Present Position and Prospects of the Reformed Church in Scotland.
Each chapter is by a different minister and the chapter on John Knox is from the pen of our late friend Rev. J. P. McQueen.
