In December the Home Secretary expressed to the BBC and IBA the Government’s concern over the standards of broadcasting. While guidelines have been laid down, it appears that the broadcasting authorities do not enforce their own rules strictly enough. More recently a Crown Court judge accused TV companies of helping to create a crime
wave on Britain’s streets. He said: “This is a generation deluged with impressions of violence and guns. I am convinced it has had an effect.” When responsible persons express such concern it is surely time for action to be taken before society is debased to the level of the programmes which are broadcast. If the present holders of positions of responsibility in broadcasting cannot be trusted to exercise that responsibility in such a way as to deprive corrupters of society from having access to the media, then they should be replaced by men who will. It is a matter of such consequence for the nation that the matter cannot be left to go by default.
