A report by H.M. Inspectorate of Schools indicates that there has been a decline in religious observance in Scottish schools. The report stated that attitudes of staff and pupils in primary schools were favourable to religious observance but less so in many secondaries. The Scottish Education Minister, Mr Michael Forsyth, said that he believed it was important that religious observance should be a regular feature of our schools, as a complement to religious education.
It is becoming clear that schools are becoming more and more secularised as the interest in religion declines in the nation. In some cases the nature
of the religious education given and of the religious observances practised is such that the pupils would be better without them. It does not seem likely that there will be any radical improvement in these matters until there is a genuine revival of religion in the land.
