Meeting of Synod.
—The half-yearly meeting of Synod will (God willing) be held in Inverness Church, on Tuesday, the 3rd day of July. The Moderator (Rev. D. Beaton) will preach at 12 noon.
Donations from Australia to Foreign Mission Fund.
—The Treasurer acknowledges, with cordial thanks, the following donations to Foreign Mission Fund, received per Rev. Walter Scott, Brushgrove, Clarence River, New South Wales:—Collections by Brushgrove—Grafton Congregation of Free Presbyterian Church, years 1905-1906, £16 12s. 6d.; by Woodford Dale Mission Sabbath School, years 1905-1906, £5 3s. 1d.; Donation from S. Porter, Esq., Pitnacree House, East Maitland, N.S.W., £1.—In total (deducting 4s. 7d. for Bank Draft), £22 11s. Our Church is much indebted to Mr. Scott, who takes a warm and sympathetic interest in its testimony, and has publicly commended to his people the interests of our Foreign Mission field.
The Southern Presbytery and Religious Education by the State.
—The following resolution has been forwarded by the Southern Presbytery to the Prime Minister and Mr. Augustine Birrell, Minister of Education:—
“This Presbytery, following with much interest the discussion in the House of Commons of the English Education Bill, considers it to be the duty of the British Government to place the Bible in the hands of every child educated under State control, approves of simple Bible teaching in our national schools, believing that God’s Word will accomplish that which He pleases, and expresses its earnest hope that the Government will vindicate its right, conferred by the mandate of Protestant parents, to give to God’s Book, which is the children’s inalienable inheritance, a statutory place in the Educational Code.”
The late Mrs. Fraser, Glasgow.
—Many friends throughout the Church will learn with sorrow the death of Mrs. Fraser, 39 Scott Street, Garnethill, Glasgow, which took place on the 11th June. The deceased, who was a daughter of the late eminent catechist, Donald Duff, was much esteemed for her piety and worth, and was widely known for her attachment to the cause of Christ and truth. Much sympathy is felt for her family in their great bereavement, one of her sons, Mr. Samuel Fraser, being presently on a visit to Canada, in the company of the Rev. Ewen Macqueen, the deputy to our mission there. We hope to have a fuller notice in a future issue.
The Canadian Deputy.
—We are thankful to say that the Rev. Ewen Macqueen, the deputy to our Canadian Mission, arrived safely at his destination, and is presently pursuing his interesting labours in that part of the vineyard, where we hope an abundant blessing is enjoyed.
The Churches’ Commissioners.
—The Commissioners have allocated the Training Colleges to the United Free Church, subject to the condition that should these Colleges be transferred to the Committee of Council on Education, the money paid, if any, shall be subject to the allocation of the Commissioners. The Colleges referred to, of course, are the training colleges for teachers, and not the theological colleges. The Commissioners further allocate all real foreign mission property and funds formerly belonging to the Free Church. The question of funds bequeathed generally for foreign missions and not appropriated to any particular mission is reserved.
