The Committee appointed by the Synod drew up the following protest:—“The Synod of the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland enter their earnest protest against the movement to levy tax on betting, because it is tantamount to legalising it, and thereby lowering to a dangerous degree the moral standard hitherto maintained by this nation, and which, if once adopted, cannot without great trouble be eradicated again. The very fact that a Committee has been appointed to consider such a proposal proves “de facto” that the high moral tone hitherto held by the Legislature of the nation as to the danger of betting and gambling is becoming lower: for such a proposal would not be considered by the British Government in the past. Instead of making lax laws in favour of betting, the Synod pray the Government to pass the strongest prohibitory laws, so as to put an end to betting in this nation.”
