The Prime Minister at Mass.
It was reported on the B.B.C. news that Mr. Macmillan, the Prime Minister was present on the 29th of August at what is called Requiem Mass in the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral, London, for Roman Catholic priest, Ronald Knox, who had died some days previously. Ronald Knox was once a Protestant, but became an ardent Romanist and used his pen to further the Popish faith and to undermine Protestantism. It was reported also that Mr. Macmillan was a friend of Ronald Knox for many years. The action of the Prime Minister is to be deplored, being himself at least a nominal Protestant, at the head of the government of a Protestant nation. His example is bad indeed. Does he not remember that Roman Catholic dignatories refrained from being present at the Coronation of Her Majesty the Queen in Westminster Abbey because of the Protestant nature of the religious ceremony? It will not be for his honour to recognise publicly an idolatrous service.
Rothesay Town Council and Lord’s Day Dance.
Rothesay Town Council at the end of August, agreed by seven votes to five to permit a public dance to be held on a Sabbath evening in September, partly to provide entertainment for members of the N.A.T.O. Fleet visiting the Clyde at that time, including many American sailors. This was a sinful and miserable decision on part of the Town Council majority. The N.A.T.O. Fleet are presumably in existence to defend our liberties against godless Communism, and yet are encouraged at Rothesay to trample on the fourth Commandment; the observance of which is one of the bulwarks of our Christian religion and freedom. How blind the seven Rothesay councillors were and are!
Supposed Holy Shroud on Show at Edinburgh.
To our minds one of the most blatant and ignorant acts of veneration was reported in “The Scotsman” of 16th August, 1957. During two days in August an exhibition opened in the Central Hall, Tollcross, Edinburgh, of photographs of the Holy Shroud of Turin, claimed to be the piece of linen in which Christ’s body was wrapped as it lay in the tomb, and which, it is claimed, still bears the imprint of His features and body. The original relic is preserved in Turin Cathedral. What a record of roguesy, delusion, deception and credulity! No self-respecting, true, intelligent Christian could treat such claims but with repugnance. The exhibition was opened by a Miss E. G. Hamilton, 4a Innerleith Terrace, Edinburgh, who described herself as “non-denominational who tries to help churches in any way I can.” She was said to feel that the story of the shroud should be spread as far and wide as possible. What childish delusive nonsense! Let Miss Hamilton say what she pleases, but we assert that she is a very
ardent propagandist for Romanist, pre-Reformation, superstitious deceits. Let the story of the living Redeemer of the Bible, who left the grave for ever be spread as far and wide as possible. Whoever heard of a sinner being spiritually profited by looking at the photograph of a shroud? The power of darkness and delusion is here.
Romanist Trade Unionists Posing as Communists.
In the London “Evening Standard” for Thursday, the 15th August, 1957, there appears the following report of outstanding Romanist Trade Union leaders in this country: “Mr. W. J. Carron, President of the British Amalgamated Engineering Union, is leaving for Rome on Monday night (19th August, 1957) with 1,200 young British workers. He is a Roman Catholic, and will be the guest of the International Congress of the Catholic Young Christian Workers Movement. Rome is planning this conference on ambitious lines, as some 30,000 delegates will be there. The Pope is to return to Rome from his summer residence at Castel Gandolfa expressly to address the young workers.” In view of the fact that a U.S.A. Romanist bishop recently expressed his admiration publicly, as reported in the “Converted Catholic,” for the self-sacrifice and self-denial of those Romanists all over the world who join the Communist Party, thereby voluntarily foregoing all the rites of “Holy Mother Church” for long periods of years, in order to ascertain the methods and principles of Communism, and to use it as a political weapon to bring down national governments, is it not time and more than time, that the non-Romanist section of the British Labour Movement organised opposition, and ceased to be exploited as eatspaws to pull the Pope’s chestnuts out of the fire of industrial and economic strife? The present series of selfish irresponsible strikes for shorter hours, higher wages, and the easiest possible conditions of labour, have no intention of stopping, urged on by the unscrupulous Pope’s unscrupulous army of Jesuits, till Britain is bankrupt and ruined. The latest demand of the Amalgamated Engineering Union is for a forty-hour week, quite regardless of the economic laws of supply and demand, and no National Government has the courage to call a halt, but yield to Vatican-inspired unscrupulous demands because of the fear of the reactions of the tyrannical Romanist vote.—John P. MacQueen.
