Inveraray Presbytery of the Church of Scotland, at a meeting in January, approved a proposal for the restoration of the 18th century steeple of a church (presumably in Inveraray) which was taken down as it was in a dangerous condition. The cost is estimated at £10,500. Surely this is the height of folly and a most extravagant proposal indeed, when the Church of Scotland declares at its Assembly that millions of pounds are required for building churches in new housing areas. What will a £10,000 steeple do for the good of precious souls in Inveraray? If the Gospel of Christ will be preached to sinners in Inveraray, this precious means of grace and the people who may hear it can well do without a costly steeple. Congregations do well to have plain, comfortable church buildings; and any extra money people may have to devote to church purposes can surely be devoted to better purposes than an unnecessary steeple. Ornate church buildings are still more or less the order of the day in the Church of Scotland, although money for Church purposes is anything but plentiful.
