We have read for the first time criticism of The Bulwark, the Scottish Reformation Society’s monthly magazine, other than what we have written in our own pages here; and that is in the Irish Evangelical, published by the Irish Evangelical Church. The Editor states in general terms first: “For many years it has not been distinguished for the strength of its loyalty to Reformation Principles.” This confirms our own recent and, repeated detailed criticism of The Bulwark. But the Irish Evangelical Editor deals in particular with a statement by a contributor to the September, 1958, issue of The Bulwark. The statement is: “Many find it impossible any longer to accept orthodox Protestant and Catholic teachings about the fiery torment of an everlasting hell, feeling it to be a contradiction to the gospel of the holy love of God, and an offence to the heart and conscience of regenerate man.” The editor of the Irish Evangelical quotes Dr. A. A. Hodge in criticism of the above erroneous and unscriptural statement. We had this dangerous statement also noted for criticism. The Scriptures even briefly quoted are the answer to such false doctrine. Christ himself says: “The Son of man shall . . . gather out of his Kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew, 13, verses 41, 42). If the Reformation Society, Edinburgh, condones the error cited above, then let them close down now, as none will be in what the Bible and the Saviour describes as hell, in their view. So why try to Reform anybody! And let the Hope Trust funds be given over to such as may make a proper use of them according to the Trust. We also note that the Free Church of Scotland has not written any word of warning and necessary criticism with reference to The Bulwark.
