Roman Catholicism in the Light of Scripture: printed by the Protestant Truth Society, 184 Fleet Street, London, E.C.4, price 8/6d. “The original manuscript of this book was written in Chinese by the late Mr. F. C. H. Dreyer, who was a missionary of the China Inland Mission.” After Mr. Dreyer’s death Mr. Ernest Weller, another missionary of the C.I.M., translated the manuscript into English and added material to the book, “making the whole volume indeed a complete compendium on the Roman Catholic faith. We homologate what has been stated further in a covering letter from the publishers, “all the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church are examined herein in the light of Bible truth.” There are 210 pages, with thirty-six concise chapters, which deal clearly, and with quotations from authorities both Roman Catholic and Protestant, with such subjects as “Transubstantiation,” the “Sacraments,” “Purgatory,” “The Rosary,” and “Papal Succession” etc., etc. Of course the Scriptures are the main light brought to bear upon every matter dealt with. The chapter on “The Papal Succession” takes up only five pages; but what devastating and authentic revelations are recorded therein concerning the broken line of Popes with their black history. To quote at random: “John XII, a monster of wickedness was raised to the papedom at the age of eighteen. His tyrannies and debaucheries were such that, upon the complaint of the people of Rome, the Emperor Otho tried and deposed him.” This is a book for the ordinary reader but would be most useful to students of theology.
