In The English Churchman of November, 21st, 1958, in the column “By The Way,” the writer “Layman” has the following note: “If the Church of England is to avoid a wholesale movement towards Roman Catholic or Orthodox Church doctrines and practices then Evangelical and moderate churchpeople will have to do something about it. There are several diocesan bishops who once were active Evangelicals and who still appear on the platforms of Evangelical Church societies. Must they remain silent on such an occasion, for example, as the holding of a “Requiem Mass” for the late Bishop of Chichester?” In this note “Layman” seems to be sadly affected by the silence and lack of witness bearing on the part of bishops in his Church who have had a reputation as evangelicals. Fearless, good soldiers of Jesus Christ appear to be few today even among professed evangelicals. The Lord may be offended, but there is an avoidance of action that will offend men.
