The Wolfenden Report on Homo-sexuality and Prostitution came up for debate and discussion in The House of Commons on Wednesday, 26th November last. One Parliamentary Correspondent commented that Mr. Butler, the Home Secretary, set the Commons an excellent example when he opened the debate. He said that Mr. Butler’s speech was of a standard that few M.P.’s could attain. Having read a full account of the speech we are ready to agree with the Correspondent. One thing of course was lacking, as is characteristic of the House of Commons, Mr. Butler did not quote Scripture; although he referred to religious and Christian opinion on this terrible moral “cancer” which exists within our nation; and that in society which the Christian ethic permeated, it had been abhorred as an unmentionable evil and had been visited with the severest penalties. Those concerned for the moral wellbeing of our Nation will be greatly relieved that Mr. Butler and the Government do not intend to alter the law which deals with the aforesaid gross evil as a crime; for they do not wish “to imply approval or tolerance of what they regard as a great social evil,” said Mr. Butler. It appears, we think, that Mr. Butler has given study and heed to solemn, Christian opinion, based on the Word of God, and as submitted by responsible parties, the Free Presbyterian Church included. The Government are concerned about Prostitution also which has become a grave problem especially in London. Fire came down on London from the sky during the last War and brought awful destruction and misery to many. God is not mocked. Fire can come down again in the judgment of God, because of the sins of Sodom and other evils, committed throughout the nation. Truly, except the Lord had left unto Britain a godly remnant we would be suffering greater judgments than those that have already come upon us.
Russian Day of Rest.
It was reported that the Soviet Union’s day of rest has been changed since the beginning of December, from the Lord’s Day to Saturday. This is just another evil official Russian decree to undermine the existence and practice of Christianity among the people of Russia. The Lord’s Day stands out among the days of the week as a testimony to the Lord Jesus Christ and His glorious resurrection, a foundation truth of the Christian faith and an evidence of the deity of our Lord. The poor benighted, atheistical leaders of the Soviet Union may at present think it possible to overthrow and destroy true religion in those regions where they exercise power. But what is their creature power to the almighty power of Christ? In judgment, it seems they are being left to harden in their defiance of God. Pharoah likewise hardened his heart but God dealt with him and his hosts in His time and way at the Red Sea. And God will not be mocked indefinitely by the Russian rulers.
