Lord Boothby in his Rectorial Address to the students of St. Andrews University, in April, 1959, made, among other statements, the following: “Make the most of life. It wont last long . . . enjoy yourselves and be gay. By so doing you will obey the will-to-live, and fulfill the only divine orders we know of.” At the Free Presbyterian Synod in May, we criticised much of his Address, and this will appear in the Synod Proceedings in due course. But we wish in this Comment to record with satisfaction that Principal T. M. Knox, of St. Andrew’s University, took occasion at the graduation ceremony there at the end of June, to reprove Lord Boothby. The Principal said: “We are called to be men not beasts: we are called to a life in which duty takes precedence to enjoyment, a life in which we recognise that the chief end of man is not to pursue amusement or ease, but to glorify God and enjoy Him for ever.” As one paper stated, this contrasted with the advice given by the Rector of the University, Lord Boothby in April. We should be grateful that the Principal took a dignified occasion to administer a dignified and much needed reproof to the worldly minded Lord Boothby, while giving good counsel to the students.
