Inverness Presbytery of the Church of Scotland met at the beginning of September, heard Rev. D. Morrison, Croy, express concern about the allegations made against the Church’s Gateway Theatre, Edinburgh, by the late Rev. S. T. M. Robertson, Ardclach, at the last two General Assemblies. His motion that a small committee of the Presbytery be appointed to consider these allegations about the theatre was rejected. The Moderator of Presbytery told Mr. Morrison that the Convener of the Assembly’s Home Board had insisted that they had the whole situation under review. Mr. A. H. Archibald, elder, seemed to be quite unperturbed about the theatre. He said it was a vexed question whether the theatre should present the World as it was, or the World as they would like to see it. If Mr. Archibald would turn to the Bible, he would see the World described there by the Holy Spirit, as without God, without Christ and without hope, and living in all manner of sin. And he would see depicted there how the ungodly can be saved, by the grace of God. The Gateway Theatre is the carnal world right into the midst of the Church of Scotland. And it is tolerated, supported and defended by ministers and elders and the people. Truly a sad Sign of the times.
