The late Mr. Alexander Mackenzie, Elder, Halkirk.
Some of the Lord’s dear children have tribulations to which others are strangers, but “all things work together” for their good, and with the sweet singer of Israel they say,
“The storm is changed into a calm
at His command and will;
So that the waves which raged
before, now quiet are and still
Then are they glad, because at rest
and quiet now they be;
So to the haven He them brings
which they desired to see”
The subject of this obituary had times of mental illness which put him aside for periods from usual activity and attendance on the public means.
He was one of a large family and was born at Acknairn, Skinness, Lairg. He was brought to a saving knowledge of the truth early in life.
He was a teacher in a small school prior to removing to Glasgow. He highly appreciated the ministry there of the late Rev. Neil Cameron, and became a Deacon in his congregation, where he had the fellowship of many like-minded. He came to Caithness at a later date and was ordained an Elder in 1946 in Halkirk-Helmsdale congregation. He took an active and helpful interest in congregational matters, while able to do so. He was original in prayer and was heard with acceptance in giving “Marks of Grace” at Fellowship Meetings—marks which we believe he himself had.
He departed this life on 19th November last, at the age of 73, and was predeceased by his brother William, who was a member and Church Officer in this congregation. Sympathy is extended to his aged and only surviving brother (also a member) and to others who mourn his removal.—W. Grant.
