This volume of 203 pages has for its subject-matter the more prominent of the Covenaning martyrs of Scotland, together with a closing chapter giving a brief outline of Scottish Covenant history in the 17th century. The author deals with such notables as James Guthrie, Hugh MacKail, Richard Cameron, Donald Cargill, James Renwick, and various others, and writes in a clear readable style, showing a sympathetic attitude to Scotland’s heroes of the faith, and an insight into their views which warrants one to believe that the volume is the fruit of grace in the author. Those who value the contentions of the fathers, and the cause for which they suffered, will find it difficult to tear themselves away from this book until they have finished it. We often hear the complaint of Sabbath School teachers and others who have charge of the religious instruction of the young that they have great difficulty in getting suitable books to be given as prizes, but we have no hesitation in recommending this book for such a purpose, and especially in such a day as ours when Romanists and Modernists have poured out from the press their adulterated and biased literature.
