The late Edward Morrison, Elder, North Harris
The subject of this short obituary, Mr Edward Morrison, was born in 1893, and passed to his eternal rest on 13th July, 1966. His birthplace was 1 Carrigrich, in the parish of North Harris.
Edward Morrison was well-known throughout the Church. He frequently attended communion seasons on the mainland and in the Outer Isles.
From his early youth he was circumspect in his walk and conversation. He would often tell of a particular time in his experience when he felt God’s displeasure with him, because of his sins, pressing him down to the very dust.
The late Rev. D. N. Macleod, of revered memory, was at that time the minister of the Free Presbyterian congregation of Harris. Mr Morrison was very attached to Mr Macleod, as could be understood when he spoke of Mr Macleod’s preaching. It was at the church at Tarbert that Edward Morrison received the liberty of the Gospel, when the worthy minister preached from Isaiah, chap. 53, verse 8. This was in the year 1919. Shortly after this, while working in Glasgow, he made a public profession. He had the highest respect for the Rev. Neil Cameron, who was at that time minister of St. Jude’s, Glasgow.
In the early twenties Edward was ordained to the eldership. He was naturally cheerful, generous and sympathetic. Thus his company was sought after and enjoyed by his brethren. He was appointed a missionary in the early thirties. He fulfilled his duties faithfully. Always careful and watchful, he was an acceptable speaker at all times. He excelled as a man of prayer.
His last illness was not of long duration. After being ill at home for some time, when he was attended by his sister, Mrs Macdonald, he was removed to the Lewis Hospital, where he passed away the following day.
The North Harris Congregation is weaker as a result of the departure of Edward to his everlasting rest.
