The Dairyman’s Daughter

This is a reprint of a book with which some of our older readers will be already, no doubt, familiar, and contains certain tracts first written and published in the early nineteenth century by Legh Richmond who was at the time a Church of England minister in the Isle of Wight. It was then extensively read and soon translated into most of the continental languages. That the number of copies circulating in the English language alone was thought to have been about two million is no small evidence of its popularity at the time and, we believe, usefulness. The Author’s laudable object in writing was “to discover and trace the operations of divine grace as they are manifested in the dispositions and lives of God’s real children” and we think he was able to accomplish that in an edifying and profitable manner. Whatever differences there may be among the Lord’s people as regards form of worship or Church government (and we do not look on these as unimportant) they all agree as to the preciousness of Christ as the alone, almighty Saviour; the value of their own immortal souls and their own need and that of others to prepare for the Endless World, and this we find much brought out in narratives of conversions recounted. The book is very attractively produced with colour plates showing views of places of interest mentioned and where those whose experiences are related lived for Christ and being dead in Him, yet speak. The Isle of Wight, sad to say, has earned for itself in recent times a reputation for ungodliness through its association with the holding of irreligious ‘pop festivals’, but the God who raised up such monuments of grace there and throughout our land in days gone by, is yet able to do so and it is our prayer that this little book will be used by Him as one of the means towards this end.
