This recent publication is a re-issue of Dr Stewart’s book originally published in 1936. This edition is attractively presented and is very readable.
This is not a verse-by-verse commentary of the book of Jeremiah, nor is it a full biography of the life of the prophet. The Introduction is largely taken up with a review of the criticism to which the book of Jeremiah has been subjected, in which Dr Stewart defends its authenticity. This may in part be rather technical for the average layman, but deserves the extra concentration needed to follow the author in the account given.
Dr Stewart has chosen particular passages from the prophecy and has made them the subject of the chapters in his book. He has given an exposition of these passages and drawn lessons from them for Christian practice. The author does not “force” the passages but by reasonable inferences draws out lessons which are in many cases needed among professing Christians today. There are warnings to “unfaithful shepherds,” wise counsel to Christians, and much needed direction to sinners yet in spiritual captivity.
This publication should prove acceptable and helpful.
