A solemn event took place in November when five school children and a young woman teacher perished in the snow in the Cairngorm Mountains in Inverness-shire. Caught in stormy conditions in the mountains they succumbed to the cold and died. Our deep sympathy goes out to those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. The saddest aspect of the whole matter to our mind, apart altogether from the exposure of these children to unnecessary risk, which the enquiry into the affair may, or may not establish, is the fact that the excursion in question took place at the weekend. It is sad that school children should be encouraged, as they are increasingly being encouraged, to engage in outings of various kinds on the Lord’s day. May this event be a warning to us all, and especially to our young people, and a solemn reminder of our duty to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
Rhodesian Settlement
Many in Britain will welcome the settlement of the differences which existed between Rhodesia and Britain since Rhodesia declared its independence. In view of our special interest in Rhodesia because of our Mission there, the outcome of events is very satisfying to us. We hope and pray that it will pave the way, under the Lord’s hand, for the increased spread of the Gospel in that land.
