The Church of Scotland’s Panel of Doctrine is of the view that the time is now ripe to produce a new statement of belief. If the General Assembly gives approval it is likely that a new Confession will be prepared and the Westminster Confession of Faith will be relegated to a document of purely historic interest.
There are such varying shades of belief within the Church of Scotland that the new statement of belief will have to be a very nebulous document to satisfy all parties. Indeed it is very doubtful if anyone knows what the Church of Scotland as a body believes. The casting aside of the Westminster Confession is a retrograde step, although in practice it has been discarded long ago. The real fault with the Westminster Confession was its clear statement of the doctrines of God’s Word. Consequently it was a standing condemnation of the Church of Scotland in her present practice and belief.
