A survey on Religious Education in Primary Schools contains the suggestion that morning assembly in a primary school should no longer be an act of Christian worship. “The presence in many assemblies of children of other faiths perhaps makes this undesirable,” the Report states. The idea seems to be that rather than give offence to persons of other beliefs the schools should abandon their Christian outlook and teaching and become wholly secular. How misguided people are who advocate such a course! Should a Christian nation bow to heathen sentiment in this way? Surely not! Is the ultimate outcome of our immigration policy and acceptance of people of alien beliefs in our land to be an abandonment of Christianity? If so will we not come under the same condemnation as the people of Jeremiah’s day—”Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.”
