Appeal from London Congregation

In the good providence of the Lord, the London Congregation have now purchased a Church and Manse. The purchase price of the Church is £17,000 and that of the Manse £16,500. The Church which was formerly called Zoar Chapel is a neat building which will hold a congregation of at least 150. It will need some repairs and decoration. The Manse also is very suitable. Considering the price of buildings of a similar nature in London, it would appear that the Lord has been favourable in opening up the way for this congregation to purchase a new Church and Manse at such reasonable cost.

The Synod has already made it clear that the Church as a whole should take a special interest in the London Congregation and now that the opportunity has arisen and such suitable buildings have become available, it is thought appropriate to make an appeal to friends throughout the Church to assist.

The Congregation, as is well known, is small in numbers and will need generous assistance to meet the purchase price of these buildings, quite apart from any repairs etc., which may be needed. The Deacons’ Court therefore make an earnest appeal to the people of the Church to assist the congregation as generously as possible. Recommendation re Reception of Students By Kirk-Sessions

The following recommendation of the Training of the Ministry Committee was approved by the Synod at its meeting in September, and is hereby brought to the notice of all concerned, viz., “To alter the Regulations governing the acceptance of students by Kirk-Sessions by reverting to the former practice of requiring a certain minimum standard of proficiency in educational qualifications before the candidate makes application to be received as a student studying for the ministry. The applicant shall be required to produce passes in Higher Grade English, and two other subjects on the Ordinary Grade. Exceptional cases may, however, be referred to the Synod for its judgment, at the discretion of the lower courts.”
