Divorce Laws
At a time when Scotland’s divorce rate has broken all records — 7104 divorces were granted in 1973 — moves are afoot to bring the Scottish divorce laws into line with those of England. Easier divorce became available in England with the introduction of the concept “breakdown of marriage” as the criterion for the granting of divorce. The attempt to extend easier divorce to Scotland is another indication of the low moral state of our nation, and of the refusal of men and women to be governed by the Word of God in the matters affecting divorce and re-marriage. Already the divorce laws in Scotland concede divorce to parties on grounds not sanctioned by Scripture and the new proposals can only be an added provocation of the Most High.
The Confession of Faith sets out the Scriptural view with crystal clearness. In Chapter 24, paragraph 6 of the Confession we read: “Although the corruption of man be such as is apt to study arguments unduly to put asunder those whom God hath joined together in marriage: yet, nothing but adultery, or such wilful desertion as can no way be remedied by the Church, or civil magistrate, is cause sufficient of dissolving the bond of marriage: wherein, a public and orderly course of proceeding is to be observed; and the persons concerned in it not left to their own wills, and discretion, in their own case.”
