The above Diary which is now rare is made available to readers in the July—August issue of the Banner of Truth Magazine. James Calder (1712-75), himself an eminent and godly minister, was contemporary with such notable ministers as Rev. Hector MacPhail, Resolis, and Rev. John Porteous, Kilmuir Easter. Indeed, mention is made in the Diary of their deaths which took place only a short time before that of James Calder himself. As well as giving some insight into the state of religion in that part of the Northern Highlands at that period, it also describes the soul-exercises of this gracious servant of the Lord and his practice of setting aside days of prayer and fasting for the good of his own soul and to seek the Lord’s blessing upon his labours — an example which if emulated today might be instrumental in effecting a revival of religion in the souls of the ministers of Christ as well as in the souls of His people, not to speak of an awakening among the ungodly.
