By the late Rev. James MacLeod
Dear friend,
Watch against pride. Satan is sure to attack you with his lies, — that you are deceived and a hypocrite. He will stir up all the vile corruption of your nature, and pour contempt on religion, Christ, His blood and sacrifice. As Boston says, “Make much of His priesthood.” I would add to that, “Make much use of His blood, to repel the devil.”
In company, be as silent as possible, — just listen. Pass your remarks when necessary. Keep your mind sacred and secret. Few, very few, will understand you in this vile age. Rebuke sin when necessary. Bear witness on the side of your Lord and Saviour as opportunity offers.
Do not discuss or divulge experience to anyone, unless you are reasonably sure that person is genuine and real.
By faith in the most precious Lord Jesus, you will go to Heaven on your knees, — I mean secret prayer. Pray when you do not feel sure, or that you are feeling the need of it. Keep it up. When you cannot pray for yourself, pray for other poor sinners.
Keep a strict control on your lips among friend and foe. Keep your ear open to the Word, listen to it, and seek to be led by it at all times.
In spiritual and temporal matters, this is to honour the Word of God.
Yours etc.
