The protagonists of divorce reform are not long silent. Although their efforts to bring the Scottish divorce laws into line with the more liberal English ones have so far failed yet they continue to press the matter, hoping eventually to wear down and finally crush all opposition and so secure their objective.
The latest indication of how matters stand is seen in the statement by Lord Hunter, Chairman of the Scottish Law Commission, that he sensed a slightly more sympathetic approach from the Government on the matter of Scottish divorce reform. This, taken in conjunction with the news that the Roman Catholic Member of Parliament for Argyll, Mr Iain McCormick, intends to bring in a Private Member’s Bill for the reform of the Scottish Divorce Laws, shows that the advocates of this measure have not been idle.
It is a sad reflection on the state of the nation that such a measure as this should be deemed necessary by some, and a sadder one that men in positions of responsibility should be actively engaged in making the door for divorce wider when they should be endeavouring to support in every way possible the institution of marriage, and seeking to restore respect for it in the minds and hearts of the rising generation.
