The Northern Presbytery record with a deep sense of loss the passing away at Inverness on Tuesday, 17th February of Rev. John Colquhoun, formerly of Glendale, Isle of Skye, and a member of this Presbytery since his retirement. The death of this faithful servant of the Lord leaves a blank in our midst which it will not be easy to fill.
The Presbytery would record with thankfulness to the Lord, the long years of service which Mr Colquhoun was enabled to give to our own Church and to the Church at large. His abundant labours in the Gospel in preaching and pastoral duties, as well as his indefatigable labours by his able pen in defending and proclaiming the Gospel, are well known. He was indeed “a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”. Mr Colquhoun was well versed in the many controversies of the Church of God down through the centuries. He also fully understood the need for, and whole-heartedly supported the testimony of the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland. To the maintenance of its witness in a dark day in Scotland he devoted his energies and prayers to the end of his day.
While we as a Presbytery mourn the loss of this gracious servant of the Lord from our midst, and know that this loss will be felt throughout the whole Church, we are comforted in the assurance we have that our loss is his eternal gain. He has, we believe, now entered into the joy of his Lord to receive the commendation : “Well done, good and faithful servant”. The Presbytery desires to convey to his widow, Mrs Colquhoun, who so ably supported her husband during a long life of service in the Gospel, its sincere sympathy in her great loss, and pray that she may experience much of the Lord’s gracious Presence and sustaining power in her time of sorrow.
