Prime Minister Ian Smith has accepted the proposals of Dr Kissinger, the American Secretary of State, for a solution of the Rhodesian situation. What the eventual outcome of these proposals will be, whether it will mean continued responsible government in Rhodesia, albeit under majority African rule, or a slide to Marxist rule, is difficult to see at present. It is likely that Mr Ian Smith will require firm safeguards before he relinquishes the reins of government. Indeed, it seems likely that he has already received assurance of these before he consented to the proposals. If so, we do hope that these assurances will be honoured and responsible government continued in that land. This would prove most advantageous for the continuance of the work of our Mission in Rhodesia.
