Dear friend,
There is a long time since I wrote to you or since we saw you. In your last letter you told me that you were reading a vol. of Ambrose. I remember I read a book of his in Dutch — “Looking unto Jesus” in which he dealt with the birth, sufferings etc. of Christ. It was many years ago but I still remember how beautifully he wrote on “He shall drink of the brook in the way; therefore shall He lift up the head.” Ps. 110. And I have a friend a poor invalid who often reads this book.
“Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” The older I grow, the more I need of the precious blood of Christ. I still remember Rev. James Macleod’s sermon at Beauly on “Worthy is the Lamb” and the blessing that — got during that service. I always had a desire to hear him preach, and that was fulfilled. That man is now delivered from the body of sin and death, and enjoys eternal happiness.
I often think of R—— R—— whom I met last year. When taking leave of my pupils going to another school, I told them how I was refreshed by that portion on his wall “JESUS HIMSELF DREW NEAR” His drawing near to unclean creatures to cleanse them. That is what I need!
If we are spared we hope to go to America early in 1965, to see New England — the land of the Pilgrim Fathers, and my relations in Iowa, Vancouver and California, and oh! to meet some of the Lord’s people there.
