This book consists of nine lectures given by Dr Sprague to his congregation in Albany, U.S.A., in the last century on the subject of revivals of religion. The subject is one of perennial interest and the re-appearance of the book is welcomed. In addition to the lectures there is an appendix, almost as long as the lectures themselves, containing twenty letters written by different ministers in America giving their own thoughts on revivals and based on their own experience of such seasons of blessing. These letters contain matter full of interest and instruction in relation to revivals of religion.
In the lectures in the main part of the book, Dr Sprague goes very systematically into the whole subject of revivals of religion indicating the nature of true revivals, the dangers and difficulties attending them, the means of promoting true revivals and the proper way of handling those who have come under the influence of the truth at such a time. Dr Sprague is not unaware that even where true revivals are found, we may expect to find influences at work to mar and discredit the work, but he does not regard this as a reason why such revivals should be written off as not being of the Lord. We are to expect Satan at such a time to do his utmost to spoil the work and sow tares among the wheat.
The warnings that Dr Sprague gives in his book are most timely for our day as well as his own, and we are happy to commend this book of lectures and letters as conducive to producing sound views on the matter of revivals of religion.
