The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Glasgow is critical of the Church of Scotland for advocating the end of separate schooling. The Archbishop urged Roman Catholic parents to safeguard a sacred trust and oppose any moves to end the present schooling system in Scotland.
We do not wonder at Archbishop Winning speaking in this way. The Roman Catholic Church secured for itself in education a position which should never have been granted and which should not be tolerated. Roman Catholic schools staffed with mainly Roman Catholic personnel have been provided often at Protestant ratepayers’ expense. In these schools the anti-Christian Roman Catholic religion has been taught, religion which in its very nature is subversive of the Protestant constitution of our land. It is easy to see why Archbishop Winning wishes to have them continued but for the good of our nation they should be abolished. The pernicious influence of segregated education in Northern Ireland is well known. Why then should such an obnoxious system be maintained throughout the rest of the land?
