The Pope sent a message of condolence to the Queen over the murder of Lord Mountbatten. He condemned the murder as an insult to human dignity and went on to pray for the dead, asking God to be merciful to
those who had died and to touch the hearts of violent men with His healing grace.
Smooth talk is all very fine but more than messages of condolence are required from the Pope. Let him speak authoritatively to his followers in Eire and in Northern Ireland, requiring them to desist from their murderous practices or be cut off from the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. It is the Roman Catholic Church that has spawned the men of violence. Let her then take responsibility for them and for their evil deeds.
