Marriage of Prince of Wales
The marriage of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer has now taken place. The wedding created tremendous interest, not only in our own country and in the Commonwealth but throughout the world. Millions watched the event on television. The eyes of the world, as it were, were focused on this one event. Another event is yet to take place which every eye shall see — the coming of the Son of Man. If men were so stirred when the Prince of Wales took his bride, how much more so will men be stirred when Christ comes to take His Bride, the Church, to be with Him in glory for ever. In that day all His enemies shall be made His footstool.
The new Princess of Wales, as was reported earlier, did not give the promise to obey her husband in keeping with current unscriptural views of the place of women and their equality with men. The Roman Catholic Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster took part in the service. (This is referred to elsewhere in this issue of the Magazine.) The Archbishop of Canterbury gave an address in which there was little, if anything, of spiritual value. These matters are to be deplored. What need the Royal Family have of godly spiritual counsellors who could show them the way of uprightness and truth in order that they might be brought to saving belief of the truth and to be living followers of the Lord Jesus Christ.
We pray that the Lord may bless the Prince of Wales and his wife in their marriage and that they may be brought by divine grace to set an example in their high station and before their family should the Lord so bless them.
Sabbath Polo-playing by Prince of Wales
The Prince of Wales continues to desecrate the Sabbath by his polo playing on that day. Even on the Sabbath before his marriage he was engaged in this game. It is regrettable that the Duke of Edinburgh set a bad example before his family in the matter of Sabbath sport. We pray that all the members of the Royal family and multitudes throughout the land may be brought to see the evil of Sabbath sport and turn from it to the worshipping of God on His holy day.
Violence
The outbreak of violence in many of our cities has taken the authorities by surprise yet it is the natural outcome of a society that has to a large extent cast off the fear of God. When the restraining grace of God is withdrawn in any measure from a nation the outbreak of all kinds of evil is to be expected. While the authorities will, no doubt, take all possible steps to prevent and restrain such outbreaks of violence, the great need of the nation is for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit of God so that the nation would be brought to repentance. May the Lord graciously grant it to this sin-darkened land of ours.
