The Lord’s Day Observance Society warn about the abuse of opinion polls by those who wish to establish a majority in favour of Sabbath trading. They point out that the B&Q store chain admitted influencing an opinion poll by sending out a memorandum asking all their stores to make ten separate telephone calls to register a vote in favour of Sabbath trading. The Society therefore will question all other polls conducted by the Shopping Hours Reform Council.
They state: “During past decades this country has been undermining the Laws of Almighty God. Moral standards have declined at an alarming rate and Sabbath observance is no exception. To lose the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship is to our inestimable loss.”
They further comment: “A nation that is rich in goods but poor towards God is on the road to spiritual bankruptcy. We must not permit our Christian heritages to be taken from us. It is not what the people say that should determine the law but what God’s Word says: “The Society through its General Secretary pledges itself to continue to resist all attempts to undermine God’s Day.””
