Outer Isles Presbytery Letter

2 November 1990

The Right Hon Margaret Thatcher PC MP

Prime Minister

10 Downing Street

London

Dear Prime Minister

European Community

When our Presbytery met recently, I was instructed to write and express our support of your stand against European political and monetary union.

We were resolutely opposed to our nation’s entry into the European Economic Community at the time that the proposal was first made and nothing has happened since to make us feel that we were mistaken in our attitude. Our national sovereignty has been steadily eroded until the point is now reached where the formation of a European Superstate is openly declared to be the aim and policy of the majority of the member states. This, as we see it, poses a grave threat to our religious and civil liberties.

Our Prime Minister will be aware of the fact that the member nations are predominantly Roman Catholic and that the Pope claims to have been invested with both temporal and spiritual power over all nations. This claim was repudiated by many of the European nations, including our own, at the time of the Reformation, when the so-called Holy Roman Empire crumbled, but, neither then, nor since, by the incumbent of the papal throne. In our view, there is now an attempt being made to rebuild that empire in the European Superstate and it is little wonder that we, as Protestants, and mindful of our history, are greatly concerned at the prospect.

We plead with you to stand firm on this issue and at the same time assure you of our prayerful support. “Them that honour Me, I will honour.”

On behalf of the Presbytery

Yours faithfully

Rev. John MacLeod

Clerk
