The writings of B. B. Warfield, who succeeded A. A. Hodge as professor of theology at Princeton Seminary, have always been highly valued by all who cherish the Reformed faith. He was a doughty champion and defender of the doctrines of the Word of God. Perhaps he is best known for his trenchant ‘exposure of refutation’ of the teaching of the so-called liberal theologians of his generation. Great scholar though he undoubtedly was, there is no display of scholarship in the volume presently under review. The book, which consists of nine sermons which were first preached to students at Princeton is full of sound gospel teaching. If, at times, War-
field delves deeply into difficult themes, the painstaking reader will be richly rewarded as he is taken through a closely reasoned and thoroughly scriptural demolition of some cherished view of the enemies of the Gospel. The following quotation from the sermon entitled ‘The Gospel of the Covenant’ reflects, in the opinion of the reviewer, the rich fare which is to be found in this volume:— ‘Beloved, do not, I beseech you, ground your salvation even on your faith. Ground it only in Jesus Christ who alone is your Saviour. And remember this, — that it is not your faith that saves you but God, and God alone, by whom it is that faith is wrought in your soul, and by whose power it is that you are guarded through your faith unto that salvation which is reserved for you in heaven, and which shall without fail he revealed at the last day.’
The Banner of Truth Trust is to be congratulated once more for making available in our time, works of godly and scholarly men which were owned of God in the past. D.R.M.
