The Government received a serious set-back in their policy on Europe when, through a run on the pound sterling in the money markets, the Chancellor of the Exchequer was forced to withdraw Britain from the E.R.M. This resulted in a virtual devaluation of the pound. Notwithstanding the Government’s efforts to get Britain’s economy moving again matters seem to be working against them. May it not be that the Prime Minister and Government ministers are looking to their own wisdom to deliver Britain out of recession, instead of looking to the One who is ruling in heaven and in the earth? May it not be that the Lord is speaking to us as a nation in our present plight? As a nation and in the high councils of the land we have left God out of account. Is it any wonder then that we are brought so low? Let us turn as a people, high and low, to the Lord and then we may see ourselves delivered out of our present plight. If we refuse to do so, our situation may become even worse than at present.
Northern Ireland
The Secretary for Northern Ireland has been doing all in his power to bring the different parties in Northern Ireland together. For this purpose he has set up talks in which the Eire Government has a part. The most recent of these was held in Dublin. Rev. Ian Paisley withdrew from the talks earlier because of the refusal of the Eire Government to address the question of the Eire Constitution, which claims jurisdiction over Northern Ireland. Until this is changed the Protestant parties in Northern Ireland see little hope of a settlement. The Eire Government wish to use this false claim as a pawn to obtain concessions from the Protestants in Northern Ireland. It should be clear to everyone that what Eire wants is conquest and not recognition of Northern Ireland’s right to adhere to the United Kingdom. No doubt it is the hope of the Eire Government that they may win by subtlety what the IRA have failed to win by their campaign of terror and murder over many years. However, the battle is not man’s but the Lord’s. He has preserved His Cause in Northern Ireland because He still has a people there who fear Him, however few they may be. He will continue to maintain His Cause for their sake. Let them not despair. The Lord will yet arise and build Zion. Only then will the people of Eire be delivered from the Romanist bondage in which they have been held so long. The way may be open then for Ireland to be united as one people, serving one Lord.
