Letter

by Rev. Neil Cameron
(To Donald MacMaster, Strontian)

S.S. Grenadier.
20th January 1894.

My beloved friend,

I am on my way to Tighnabruaich for the Sabbath. I am getting anxious to hear how you are and how the Lord is pleased to deal with you in the hour of your bodily weakness. You are before my mind night and day but that is worth nothing. My doubts about my own state before the Judge of Eternity are every day increasing and still such is the stupid carnality of my mind that I seem so careless under these doubts.

What a fearful thing eternity without peace with God through Christ must be! Oh, that Christ were made to us what He was to those who believed on Him! “Unto you therefore which believe He is precious.” “He will satisfy the desire of every thing that lives,” and the desire after a saving union with and a saving knowledge of Christ shall surely be satisfied. I hope, my dear friend, in the midst of your sickness and weakness “that He (Christ) is the strength of your heart. His atoning death and the efficacy of His blood shed for the remission of the sins of many is the only foundation of the good hope through grace which shall not be put to shame. It may be very small even like the grain of mustard seed, still if this be its kind it will bring forth fruit after its kind.”

The Lord grant that you may be raised from the gates of death and that you may go to the gates of the daughter of Zion to show forth the praises of the Lord.

The state of the poor church of Christ in Scotland is heart-rending. Her once pretended friends wounding her and she continuing to go further astray from her God and His commandments every day. The Lord grant the Spirit of grace and supplications be poured upon us.

Plead with the Lord for His poor Kirk in Scotland. She had glorious days and you saw them but the enemies have set up their ensigns for signs in the Lord’s sanctuary. All this has come upon us because we have sinned so grievously against the Covenant God of our fathers. Pray for me.

Kind regards to all enquiring friends — as if mentioned by name and Fond love to Mary (Allan), Miss MacMaster and yourself.

I remain,

Your loving friend,

Neil Cameron.
