It is with a sense of revulsion that any true Christian reads of homosexuals or sodomites — to give them their Scriptural name — being treated with deference and given a place in society as if their conduct was not, after all, unspeakably vile and unnatural. It is for our instruction and admonition that it is left on record that, under the eye of heaven, “the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.” The Divine attitude towards such behaviour remains the same as it was and that nation or community which tolerates and condones it is surely wringing judgment from the hand of the Almighty. It would seem that such vile men are becoming so numerous and influential that even in Scotland we find the so-called national Church publishing a discussion document in which it is declared “that many homosexual Christians were in committed relationships and viewed their sexuality as a positive aspect of their lives.” The document further states “Many committed gay and lesbian Christians do not see their disposition as evil. They see it as a positive, though minority, gift of God to be enjoyed as part of the fullness of life which heterosexuals are entitled to enjoy. . . And some do commit themselves to a relationship as permanent and monogamous as the best marriages.” The framers of this document are really in spiritual darkness if they accept that such people are worthy of the name Christian. In our view, any Church which welcomes and tolerates within its communion men and women whose behaviour God has pronounced abhorrent in His sight, is apostate; it has degenerated to such an extent that it is become no church of Christ but a synagogue of Satan. The publishing of this document follows the issuing of a statement by Cardinal Hume and which the press described as “a remarkably humane and tolerant in praise of homosexual friendship and love.” This was supposed to clarify the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality. To us, it appears to be the production of a man who is trying to speak with two voices at one and the same time. What can one expect when the so-called priesthood of that body which he represents has in recent times drawn such attention to itself on account of having within its ranks — world-wide — many who are living in the very sin condemned. And now we have an Anglican Bishop belonging to the Diocese of Ripon but formerly the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway openly revealing that he is a sodomoite and that he has been one for a considerable time. His action in coming out into the open has been described as “brave” and “courageous” and his immediate superior, the Bishop of Ripon, expressed his appreciation of “the ministry he exercises in the diocese.” “I have made it clear”, the same man said, “that clergy who are homosexual are among the best of our clergy”. Who can possibly describe the fearful depravity and wickedness of men who speak and act in this manner and yet claim to be servants of Christ? What, we may well ask, shall the end of these things be?
